See what $30 million and 14 years can do.

That’s right. Vintner Daryl Sattui, who also owns tourist-friendly V. Sattui Winery in St. Helena, spent 14 years and $30 million building  Castello Di Amorosa, a 121,000-square-foot castle. A popular tourist destination, it’s also a working winery, producing a broad range of wines to explore.

If you grew up building sand castles, this medieval-style fortress is not to be missed. Its 107 rooms on eight levels feature towers, turrets, a moat and even a dungeon.

Day trip advice: An early morning shopping spree through downtown St. Helena, followed by lunch at Cindy’s Backstreet Kitchen, comfort food at its best, (1327 Railroad Ave., St. Helena, 707-963-1200). Then spend a decadent afternoon of sipping wine with a unique backdrop, a stone fortress. Castello Di Amorosa, (4045 St. Helena Highway N., Calistoga, 707-967-6272).
