You in? Going to ZAP?

Are you a fan of snappy, back-talking zins or do you prefer the gallant, well-mannered ones? These extremes and everything in-between will be poured at the 20h annual ZAP (Zinfandel Advocates & Producers) Tasting Saturday, Jan. 29 at San Francisco’s Fort Mason.

In light of the colossal pool of zin to be poured Saturday, I did a blind preview tasting. So my Thank God It’s Friday Wines are a trio of zins that will be poured at the tasting:

D Cubed, 2007 Napa Valley Zinfandel, 14.7, $27. A big, ripe zinfandel with layered flavors. Notes of plum, blackberry, raspberry and licorice. Spicy finish.

Seghesio, 2009 Sonoma County Zinfandel, 15 percent, $24. A striking, complex zin that has depth. Jammy fruit, with notes of coffee, vanilla and caramel. Lingering finish.

Collier Falls, 2006 Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel, 15.7 percent, $32. A tasty zin, ripe and jammy. Notes of blackberry, black cherry, plum, sage and spice.

Say, are you going to the tasting? If so, why? What is it about zin, the diva of wines, that gets your attention?
