The Honig, 2010 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc ($16) has a unique back label, and I’ve never come across anything quite like it.

The back label is inside the bottle and reveals a picture of vineyards that you spy through the white wine.

“The Honig Sauvignon Blanc was the first wine to have an inside back label,” said Regina Weinstein of Honig. “The Sauvignon blanc package is designed to give you a feeling for the place where the wine originates. The illustration on the inside back label, which you see by looking through the bottle, is an artist’s rendition of our family’s property here in Rutherford.”

Weinstein worked with designer Jim Moon and the actual illustration was done by Tom Hennessey. Honig produces about 50,000 cases of the Napa sauvignon blanc each year.

”It’s been fun at consumer tastings to see someone walk past the Honig table, then double back to see the bottle because it caught their eye,” Weinstein said. We get a lot of compliments on the beauty of the package and the originality of the design.”

It turns out the wine inside the bottle is as refreshing as the label. It has aromas and flavors of grapefruit, pear, melon and spice. The wine has a round texture and vibrant acidity. A great package inside and out.
