Ben Flajnik said he would speak to me on one condition – “if it’s a wine-related question.”

So I asked the winemaker of the brand Envolve what he liked about winemaking.

“I was a brewer to begin, but winemaking happens once a year,” Flajnik said. “You never know if it’s going to be the same next year and I like the variance.”

I couldn’t ask Flajnik if his on-again off-again romance with Courtney Robertson was on again. But if Flajnik is anything like the other ‘wine guy’ star on The Bachelor in 2003 – Andrew Firestone – he’ll never make it to altar with his pick.

Firestone, now co-owner of Curtis Winery in Santa Barbara County, proposed to Jennifer Schefft  but the couple split after several months of dating. In Feb. of 2004 there were rumors that they were back together but it never materialized.

Schefft went on to star on The Bachelorette but ended up rejecting the proposals of her two final suitors. She later wrote the book “Better Single Than Sorry: A No Regrets Guide to Loving Yourself and Never Settling.”

As for Firestone, he ended up marrying Ivana Bozilovic, a Serbian model, and they have two children. Firestone is the son of Brooks Firestone, a grandson of Leonard Firestone, and a great-grandson of Firestone Tire and Rubber Company founder Harvey Firestone and Idabelle Smith.

Firestone Vineyards was founded in 1972 by father and son Leonard and Brooks Firestone, but in 2007 the family sold it. Today the couple focuses its attention on Curtis Winery, one of the few devoted to  Rhone varietals.

Who knows what will become of Flajnik and Robertson’s love. Will it age? That’s an impossible call, but it’s a safe bet to say his wine will. The Envolve, 2008 Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has good bones, great concentration and a lush texture.
