Jarvis Winery kicks off Auction Napa Valley with the Barrel, E-Auction and Marketplace today from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will be a true wine adventure because the entire winery is completely underground – bottling line, lab, offices and all.

Jarvis has kept a low profile in Napa, with tastings by appointment only, so it will be interesting to see how it fares with 2,000 people roaming through the property.

Most of the auction activity will be near the underground ballroom, including  displays of some of the live auction lots that bidders will compete for under the white tent at St. Helena’s Meadwood Resort on Saturday. If there are any celebrities, they won’t be far from these displays.

Jarvis is carved into a hillside, a 45,000 square foot sprawl that has something very unexpected in a cave setting – a 12-foot waterfall. The waterfall was created from a natural spring found at the site, with the help of a recirculating pump. There’s also a foyer nearby with marbled flooring leading into a ballroom the size of two basketball courts.

The Napa Vintners Association, which is hosting the event, is hoping to wow its guests and entice them to spend quite a bit of their disposable income.

Last year the fundraising weekend reeled in $7.3 million.
