This is the 57th Inaugural in America and we have plenty to celebrate: Peace.
Most of us take it for granted that in our country power has always and continues to be transferred peacefully. So whether you’re from a red state or a blue one, this is truly something worth celebrating.
Here’s a line-up of great bubbles for your Inaugural sipping and yes, the controversial Korbel bubbly is included. But I’ll be sure to put the word “champagne” in the right spot so I don’t offend anyone.
As you know the Champagne Bureau, a Washington lobby for the French Champagne industry, was upset by the use of the word champagne when inaugural organizers listed a Korbel sparkler. It insists real champagne can only come from the region of Champagne, France.
While most countries prohibit the word “champagne” from a sparkler’s label, US law permits it as long as the label identifies where the grapes hail from. The mistake organizers made was in the placement of the word champagne when listing the sparkler.
With this in mind, here’s my politically correct list of sparklers. All are under $25 so even those without a great deal of disposal income can celebrate “peace” comfortably.
Roederer Estate, NV Anderson Valley Brut, 12 percent alcohol, $20. This lively, crisp sparkler is spot on. It marries the best of California and French winemaking. It’s complex, with aromas and flavors of pear, hazelnut and mineral. The brut’s great acidity gives it good lift. Nice mousse. Elegant.
Domain Chandon, NV Brut Classic California, 13 percent, $22. A citrusy sparkler with notes of pear, apple and a hint of brioche. Crisp, dry finish. Vibrant.
Korbel, NV Brut Natural, Russian River Valley, California, Champagne, 12.5 percent, $11. A tasty bubbly that’s bright and lively. Nutty, with notes of citrus and spice. Nice length.
Gloria Ferrer, NV Sonoma Brut, 12.5 percent, $22. A tasty sparkler with complex flavors. Notes of apple, pear, almond and toast. Creamy texture. Nice mousse. Refreshing.
Mumm Napa, NV Brut Prestige, Napa Valley, 12.5 percent, $22. A lovely sparkler with complex aromas and flavors. Notes of melon, vanilla, toast and spice. Crisp, with great minerality. Nice length.
