One hot import is the key grape varietal of Austria — gruner veltliner. It’s as refreshing as the surf, a frolicking white wine with notes of peaches, lime peel, lemon zest and snappy white pepper. Last night I tasted one — the Nigl, Kremser Freiheit, Austria — and I felt like I had the ocean in my glass. (I thought maybe I should be tasting this in a wet suit.)

Nuggets of info for cocktail conversation: 1) Gruner Veltliner is the most quality-driven grape in Austria and the one with the largest vineyard spread. 2) For foodies, this bold crisp white is a good match with Austria’s national dish, Wiener Schnitzel, or with American fried chicken or oysters.
