The San Francisco International Wine Competition recently scored a colossal pool of wine – a total of 4,556 bottlings – and a local winemaker gets kudos. Corey Beck, winemaker of Francis Ford Coppola Winery in Geyserville won the Andre Tchelistcheff Winemaker of the Year Award.

The Emmy Award-winning sports commentator Jim Nantz is teaming up with Peter Deutsch, CEO of Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits to produce the Sonoma-based wine brand named “The Calling.” Nantz picked a smart partner. Deutsch is well known for his success in launching Australia's Yellow Tail, the number one imported wine brand in the United States.

Going into the Earth today to sip in a decadent underworld

Jarvis Winery kicks off Auction Napa Valley with the Barrel, E-Auction and Marketplace today from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will be a true wine adventure because the entire winery is completely underground – bottling line, lab, offices and all. Jarvis has kept a low profile in Napa, with tastings by appointment only, so it will be interesting to see how it fares with 2,000 people roaming through the property.

Right now about 250 California wine brands are being swirled, sniffed and sipped at the Vinexpo Asia Pacific trade show in Hong Kong, which runs through Thursday. The trade show attracts vital sippers -- more than 15,000 key trade visitors in Asia.

The Costco wine/toilet paper debacle

By now you’ve probably heard the provocative remarks that has caused a stir in Wine Country, but if you haven’t here’s the back story: Annette Alvarez-Peters, Costco's principal wine buyer, was recently interviewed in a CNBC special, "The Costco Craze: Inside the Warehouse Giant,” and here’s the exchange that has wine-lovers fired up: Alvarez-Peters: "Is (wine) more special than clothing, is it more special than televisions? I don't think so." CNBC's Carl Quintanilla: "Certainly it's different than toilet paper? Or different that tin foil?" Alvarez-Peters: "Why?" Quintanilla: "Because it's personal." Alvarez-Peters: "People can look at it that way. But at the end of the day, it's just a beverage."

Guinness World Record wine toast?
